    Hi Coach,

Was surfing the net and found this site. Just wanted to say hello from SC. If you can recall, I was married during my time with the team at SC. We celebrated our 40th anniversary this past June 11th. You had sent my 2 daughters a bib at birth, along with a nice note. We had those framed and they hang in both daughters houses today. We have 3 grandchildren now.

I got a call a few weeks ago from someone I hadn’t heard from since 1968. It was Hyrum Pierce. We were close in our college days. He’s now an attorney outside Atlanta. He hopes to see you at a future reunion. We met each other, with wives, in Columbia, and took a tour of our old stomping grounds. A trip down Memory Lane is both fun and a bit sad, as we see so many changes.

I hope that your life remains happy, and that you enjoy good health. Football did a lot for me in life, and I will always appreciate football, and especially my coaches for making it possible.

    Go Gamecocks!

  3. Peter Dietzel III Says:

    Paul,
My dad was Peter Dietzel II (Brother to Richard Dietzel) Sr, born in Columbus,Ohio in 1930. His father was also Peter Dietzel(Worked for the railroad in Bellvuue and retired to Mexico City in the late 50’s) whom I think was born in Bellvuue,Ohio where we have quite a few cousins to this day.Dad had an Aunt Pauline who lived in Sanford, Fl that we watched over till her passing. There was also a Fred Dietzel who ran a movie theatre I believe in Clermont,FL. I followed you through your stop at South Carolina and could kick myself for not contacting you when the Gamecocks came to Orlando for one of the bowl games. I still have your issue of Sports Illustrated framed in my office. Just wanted to say hi. Hope everything is going well.

    Hi Paul and Anne,
We loved sharing our maritimes trip with both of you. Seeing the fall colors should
provide a lot more subjects for your painting career.
This website was great fun to read and enjoy as well as all the others available on
Google. I had no idea that I was traveling with such a celebrity!!
Continued good health and happiness to you both.
    Vickie and Larry

  5. Alan Seyfer, MD Says:

One of the highlights of my life was playing football on Coach Dietzel’s West Point football team 1963-1966. As a fellow Southerner and Christian, Coach Dietzel, Coach Terry, Coach Hatfield, Coach Battle and the rest of Coach Dietzel’s staff inspired us - and we were fortunate to play some of the best teams in the country. As a former “Chinese Bandit,” I am grateful to have known Coach Dietzel. He made you always want to do your best!

My son has a student council shirt with the quote, “Leadership is the ability to lift and inspire” is this his quote? Just curious in case I am asked who he is. I love the quote and would like to give the proper accolades where it is due.
    Thank you,

You never know when you’re gonna make a difference.

My dad taught ROTC at LSU in the 50’s and I remember going to Tiger stadium with him as he supervised the ROTC boys who served as ushers. I was 3 or 4 at the time, but it’s indelibly etched in my memory; just like that jet plane that sits right outside Tiger stadium where I’d sit and pretend I was flyng.

In 1970, between my sophomore and junior years, I took a summer job selling books with The Southwestern Company and was sent to Columbia, South Carolina. There was a bunch of us Louisiana boys in the group. Aside from making money for school, one of our primary objectives that summer was to meet the legendary coach of our 1958 National Champs, the mastermind of the Go team, White team, and Chinese Bandits.

I don’t expect you to remember this, but one Sunday afternoon 3 or 4 of us just dropped by your house unannounced–just had to meet you. We had our hopes up but were fully prepared to be run off, as we probably should have been. When we told you who we were and why we were there, you got a big smile on your face, told us you were flattered, and took the time to visit with us.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some success coaching football: championships at the peewee, junior high, and high school levels. I went to work in ‘83 in a program similar to the one I was in as a college student in SC that summer. It has evolved into an internship, the Varsity Internship Program, and a few years ago I became the director.

None of this is mentioned to boast; I’ve been far luckier than good. I mention it to illustrate that I’ve spent a lot of years dealing with young people, in athletics and business.

You see, 30 minutes is a drop in the bucket compared to 30 years. Those few minutes you spent with us that Sunday afternoon over 30 years ago had a profound effect on the way I’ve treated people ever since. For Paul Dietzel to take the time to show an interest, well, I’ve never forgotten how it made me feel.

You never know when you’re gonna make a difference.

    Thanks, Coach.

  8. Vickie Chesser Denton Says:

Hi Coach and Mrs. Dietzel. I have thought about you two over the years. I hope that life has been good to you. I live in Palm Beach, FL and still get to Mt. Pleasant, SC to visit the folks.
I have had you on my mind and Steve and Kathie for some time and awoke early this morning thinking of you…weird. I googled and the Times has an article in today’s edition that you are, once again, retiring! Good for you. Please know you were special people in my life during my time at USC with Steve and Kathie. I send them both hellos and good wishes, too. My very best, Vickie Chesser Denton

  9. Steve Says:

Vickie, what a surprise! Son Paul is a senior at LSU and has done web pages for years - dad doesnt’ even know this is here yet but I will let him know as he’ll be glad to hear from you as well. Kathie is living in Mt. Pleasant, married to Dale DuTremble an attorney and former judge….

Great to hear from you after 35 years! Let’s keep in better touch the next 35!!
